MCP Server Overview

2 min read

Connect Made For Law's probate data to AI assistants using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

What is MCP?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants — like Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor — connect to external data sources and tools. Made For Law provides an MCP server that gives AI assistants direct access to probate fee data, state-specific legal requirements, and calculator functionality.

What Can the MCP Server Do?

When connected to your AI assistant, the Made For Law MCP server provides:

  • Probate fee lookups — Get statutory fee schedules for any US state
  • Estate cost estimates — Calculate total probate costs for a given estate value and state
  • State-specific requirements — Small estate thresholds, filing deadlines, executor compensation rules
  • County-level data — Court filing fees and local requirements where available
  • Multi-calculator access — Probate, executor fees, estate tax, and more

Who Is This For?

The MCP integration is designed for attorneys and legal professionals who use AI assistants in their daily workflow. Instead of switching between tabs or manually entering data, you can ask your AI assistant questions like:

  • "What are the probate fees for a $500,000 estate in California?"
  • "Compare executor compensation in Ohio vs. Florida"
  • "What's the small estate threshold in Texas?"

Getting Started

Choose your AI platform below for setup instructions:

  • Claude Code — Anthropic's CLI and desktop app
  • ChatGPT — OpenAI's ChatGPT with plugins
  • Cursor — AI-powered code editor
  • Windsurf — Codeium's AI editor
  • Cline — VS Code AI extension

Authentication

All MCP connections require a valid Made For Law API key. You can generate one from your portal dashboard under Settings > API Keys.

Your API key is tied to your subscription and respects your plan's calculator access. Pro subscribers get access to all available calculators and state data.
