How the Calculator Works
2 min read
Understand the probate fee calculation process, inputs, and outputs.
Overview
The Made For Law probate calculator estimates the fees associated with probating an estate in a specific state. It takes into account estate value, asset types, complexity factors, and state-specific fee schedules to produce a detailed fee breakdown.
Calculation Process
Enter Estate Details
The visitor enters basic information about the estate:
- State — Where the estate will be probated
- Gross estate value — Total value of all assets
- Asset breakdown — Real property, financial accounts, personal property, etc.
- Complexity — Simple or complex estate designation
Fee Calculation
The calculator applies state-specific rules to compute:
- Executor/administrator fees — Compensation for the personal representative
- Court filing fees — Required fees to open and close the probate case
- Attorney fees — Statutory or reasonable attorney compensation
- Bond costs — If a surety bond is required
- Miscellaneous fees — Publication, appraisal, and other costs
Results & Export
The visitor receives:
- A detailed fee breakdown showing each cost component
- An estimated timeline for the probate process
- Important notes and disclaimers specific to their state
- Option to download a PDF of the estimate
State-Specific Rules
Each state has its own rules for calculating probate fees. Some states use a percentage-based schedule (like California), while others allow "reasonable" fees determined by the court. The calculator handles these differences automatically.
See Supported States for details on each state's fee structure.
The calculator provides estimates only and is not a substitute for legal advice. Actual fees may vary based on the specific circumstances of each estate. See our Calculator Accuracy page for important disclaimers.
For Embedded Calculators
When the calculator is embedded on your website, it functions identically to the standalone version. The visitor completes the form, sees results, and can download a PDF — all without leaving your site.
If you have lead capture enabled (Pro plan), visitors can be prompted for their contact information after results are shown and before PDF/report follow-up. See Lead Capture for details.
